The School of Chemistry is offering a number of funded PhD studentships which will commence in the 2010/2011 academic year. These studentships will be 4 years in duration and will carry a stipend of €16,000 p.a. together with EU academic fees. Students will automatically be enrolled in the Dublin Chemistry Graduate Programme and will be required to act as demonstrators in undergraduate laboratories within the School of Chemistry as part of their duties. All applications for admission must be submitted through the PAC system (http://www.pac.ie/).
If you are interested in bioinorganic or bioinspired inorganic chemistry and would like to do your PhD studies on any of the following projects (detailed descriptions are available) please contact me as soon as possible:
-vanadium-dithiolene catalysed oxidation of prochiral organic sulfides to chiral sulfoxides a new approach to an important synthon (synthetic development of suitable vanadium complexes, catalysis, evaluation of enantioselectivity and yield)
-a model for the molybdopterin ligand of molybdenum and tungsten cofactors, its coordination chemistry and catalytic behaviour and biological properties of the respective complexes - towards a treatment of humane isolated sulfite oxidase deficiency (iSOD)
-investigating the influence of peptide, rigidity of the coordination sphere, inner coordination sphere with respect to coordinated atoms and metal on the entropy of redox processes in copper and iron electron transfer proteins
