Post-doctoral fellowship

Company/Institution: Department of Chemistry, University of Johannesburg
Location: Johannesburg, South Africa
Date Posted: 18 March 2009

Postdoctoral positions are available to study the structure-activity relationships of metal nano-particles for heterogeneous catalysis in the laboratories of the University of Johannesburg. The project is supported by a multinational petrochemical industrial partner.

The objective of the research is the development of specific synthetic strategies to produce well-defined metal nanoparticles with a narrow size distribution for immobilization on a suitable support material and their evaluation for catalytic activity in industrially relevant reactions. Depending on interests and skills, the successful candidate may be provided the opportunity to work closely with the industrial partner.

A highly motivated person with a Ph.D. degree in Chemistry with documented research experience (at least 2 publications) in a relevant area of either physical chemistry, catalysis, coordination chemistry or nano-chemistry is strongly encouraged to apply. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required.

The Department of Chemistry at the University of Johannesburg has a core research focus on catalysis in collaboration with various industrial partners. This focus revolves around the Catalysis Centre of Excellence housed in the Department. The research environment includes state of the art facilities.

The position carries a stipend of R180 000 per annum on a tax free basis for the successful candidate. The incumbent will be contracted for an initial one year period that may be extended by mutual agreement. The offer will be closed on fulfillment. Please apply by e-mail and send a CV, cover letter, and the names and contact information of three references to Dr Reinout Meijboom.
