Postdoctoral Research Fellow (Fixed term) in
Analytical/Environmental Chemistry:
The Identification of Endocrine Disrupting Pollutants in Wastewater Effluents

Salary scales: £27,466 to £32,796 p.a.

A 3-year NERC-funded position is available in the research group of Dr Elizabeth M Hill at the University of Sussex. This is an exciting project with the aim of identifying the structures of anti-androgenic contaminants present in wastewater effluents which may contribute to feminisation of fish in UK waters. The work will use a combination of analytical chemistry together bioassay-directed fractionation to identify active anti-androgenic structures. The project is supported by a technician who will undertake receptor bioassays to aid in the identification of active fractions and contaminants. The work is in collaboration with fish physiologists at Exeter University who will test identified structures for biological activity. The applicant should have expertise in trace analytical chemistry techniques preferably including mass spectrometry. The successful candidate will join a group investigating the environmental chemistry and toxicology of endocrine disrupting chemicals and will have access to a wide range of mass spectrometry facilities available in the School. This project is expected to make a significant impact on the understanding of how contaminants in wastewater effluents disrupt sexual development in fish. The start date is 1st February 2007 or as soon as possible thereafter.
